Greetings to all National Convention Attenders,
One of the greatest assets of the Quarter Century Wireless Association is
the annual National Coventions held at various places across North America,
and on the seas. The last one held in my country (Canada) was in Calgary.
A resurrected Chapter 151, obviously brought back to life into very good
health, was the host then. That was the year I became a QCWA member. Next,
came last year's edition held in Denver, the mile-high city. What a
picturesque spot to hold a convention. Now, we have this year's in Virginia
Beach; another gorgeous spot. Next year, a Caribbean cruise!
How sad the convention this year. Why? Because I can't go! My wife and I
are into heavy-duty care-giving at the moment. Plus, there is a family
wedding in VE6-land of all places around the same time. (The nerve of some
people's kids!)
Anyway, I have posted on my cork bulletin board a copy of the Convention
Programs for this coming weekend. I am afraid if I was there, I would not
see much of Virginia Beach & environs. I like the sound of every one of the
seminars or programs being put on this weekend. I can foresee that I would
be spending all of Friday & Saturday indoors. For example, there's: "Dad's
Radio Experiences starting 1912", put on by Al WB1EFN. I love radio
history; one of my favourite books is: "200 Meters and Down" by DeSoto.
Then, there's: "Super Crystal Sets" by AI4MI; sure sounds intiguing. Then,
for those of us into ARES/Emcomm, as well as others, we have:
"APRS/D-Star/Digital Radio" by Jason KE4NYV & Wally W4KXV. To combat apathy
at the local chapter level, there may be many fine suggestions in:
"Discovering & Organizing Chapter Events" by K3TEZ, WA4CLK & WQ4L. And on
it goes. My hat is off to the Tidewater Chapter putting together this fine
Convention program; you don't make it very easy not to be there!
The main point of all this rambling on is to WISH YOU ALL A WONDERFUL
CONVENTION THIS WEEKEND! I may be green with envy, but I wish you all the
great time I would have had.
Now, I just have to figure out how to convince my wife that, next year, a
cruise with "a bunch of hams" really is a good thing . . .
Cheers,
Dave Hayes VE3JX
