Hank W2ICW,
This is particularly for you though might be interesting to
others on the QCWA also. Bob is aware already.
N0UF that is. I also joined Signal Corps as a skilled
Hi-Speed RO at Ft Benning Sept 1940. WUO was the WD radio
call sine there. Then after about 6 months was invited to
take a stint as a CW operator on a USATS ship. There were
only 2 GI's on the ship and I was one of them. Rest were
were all Civil Service, (Master, 1st Mate, Engineer etc).
Later I was transferred off the ship to WVN (also WD Radio
system) call Sine WVN. After a year or so at WVN, was offered
an upgrade in rank from Tech Sgt to WOJG if I would accept
transfer to another S.C. unit in England. I turned it down
as another opening as Chief Opr was open at Batista Field
Cuba. That was the best decision I ever made. My buddy
RO on the ship died on Omaha Beach as he did accept the
transfer I refused. Batista field was a dream come true.
Passes each week to Havana and USO shows was great.
I guess God was smileing at me on this part of my life.
