Well I have to think deeply, but think it was W9ZUW Ralph Duke.
I was on a one trek from Miami back to Kokomo Indiana, and Ralph
built me a code oscillator so coud practise the CW. Later he
and I hitchhiked up to Chicago (the nearest RI) and took the exams.
We both passed. But the first strong contact I remember was
with KH6?? in Schofield Barracks, Hi. It was like 6 am and just
about the grey-oine. I always did my hamming early in morning as
had to complete High School. I was in the 10th Grade at the time.
Rig was a type 47 (one tube only) xtal osc. and ant was a long wire
tied at the far end to a Telephone pole.
                    Joe (ex W9ZUU)
