Hi
What was your first ham radio encounter?
In my case it was the guy next door to me, K5OSH, Russ Van Kirk. I was in
the 3/4th grade, 1963-64, and he had converted his back deck into a radio
shack. The entire end of the room was covered with neat stuff. The thing
that I remember is the waveform monitor that wiggled when he talked. The
other think that I remember was the way that he said his call sign on the
air... Ocean Sierra Hon-naa-luuu-luuu, (dragging it out). We moved and he
moved, but we visited him later and that wall of gear had been replaced by a
single transceiver.
On Halloween he had a witch that would talk.. Of course at the time I
thought that was a cool trick and now I do the same thing on Halloween..
It then took me another 13 years or so to earn my first license. It is sad,
I don't remember the call sign of name of the ham in college that gave me my
code test, but I remember the second ham that helped me along the way. The
second ham was K5BIT (SK). He encouraged me all though high school, but I
was more interested in band and girls...
