Hi Walt......I was a civilian operator at WAR 1941/42 together with about a
dozen other radio amateurs......we were recruited due to the shortage of
high speed operators. After we were trained we received rather rapid
upgrades in our rating.....after one year I was rated Principal
Communication Specialist which was as high as you could go as an operator.
By mid 42 most of the civilian operators had enlisted in the Army and were
assigned to the outfit that ran the station....17th Sig Svc Company.
I became disenchanted with pounding brass 8 hrs a day and nights........went
home for a few weeks and then enlisted in the Marine Corps hoping to get
into aviation but ended up as an instructor in the Radio School until
transferred to the 4th Marine Division in mid 43....and the rest is history
.
I definitely think that you should put your interesting experiences down on
paper and I am sure they will be well received by the members of QCWA.
