Well we just got informed by chief Carmy MARS that no further equipment
will be issued by the DRMO that is not fully compatible with NTIA
specs. (they probably have none anyway). That starts Jan 8
this year I believe, and the absoluts date for full compliance is
Jan 1 2008. Its not so much a problem with being exactly on fqcy
on hf etc, but the severly reduced mod index being narrowed down
to 15 khz on vhf uhf etc. I presume that will will include
(ouside the ham bands) hf freqs such as MARS assigned freqs also.
Most of the Icoms, Kenwoods etc except the real ancient ones
like the TS430 are pretty stable already as to being exactly
on freq on hf. The DRMO's have been instructed not to issue
any further equipment that is not fully compliant right away.
The actual implentation will be Jan 1 2008. So haveing deviation
meters and bandwidth indicators or scopes is something not too
many of us have nowadays.
                       Joe/ABM6JF
