Kevin,

Both of the gentlemen quoted below assume that the FCC was issuing KN9 calls
in strict sequence. That is not entirely correct.

The FCC started issuing WN9 Novice calls (WA9 after upgrade) in May or June
of 1961. Before that time. they were re-issuing KN9 & K9 calls. As you
know, I was originally licensed as a Novice in New Jersey with the call
WV2MBR in April of 1960. When we moved to Indiana in January of 1961, I was
issued the call KN9DUR for the remaining couple of months on my Novice
license. At the same time, I was also issued K9DUR for my newly-passed
Technician license. A neighbor of mine was issued WA9AKU in June of 1961.

The point of all of this is that the possibility exists that the call sign
in question could have been issued as late as early 1961; however, 1958 or
1959 is much more likely.

Too bad you are collecting old handbooks instead of old callbooks.

Why not have your friend (John?) apply for QCWA membership and ask them to
return a photocopy of the page out of the callbook when they verify his
eligibility? That would be cheaper than paying $25 the firm that has the
old FCC records on microfilm to do a search. I understand that the FCC has
no records prior to 1968.

73, Ray, K9DUR
