As for Amateur = Ham a number of us have explained how it came about but nobody listens. 
They say, in effect, that's an interesting "theory." So here it goes again:

	For many many years before ham radio or any other kind of radio, amateur actors (on the 
stage) were called "hams." So it became easy for the nomenclature to be transferred to 
radio amateurs when that hobby came into being. That's not a theory, fellas, that's a fact.
