That's what I was told too, but I'm sure someone will tell us it was
wrong. It is interesting to look at www.snopes.com and see how many of
these stories that circulate are false. I don't know how my comment became
a referendum on wife beating...it was merely a comment on an item I had seen
on that list previously. Wife beating is completely wrong, even in
Massachusets where you cannot even be sure if the term applies. :)
Truth to tell, we are unsure of just how many common phrases came
into use. We cannot even agree on how "Amateur Radio Operator" became
"Ham", so I doubt we'll solve these mysteries on the reflector. Good fun
though, and it brought quite a few out of the woodwork.

I was once told that WW2 airplane machine guns had 9 yards of bullets in the
ribbon. Giving him the 'whole 9 yards' meant that the pilot kept shooting
at
his target until every bullet was fired.
