Tnx Norm. I always wondered about that now I know. I was'nt sure just
when the Pentagon was installed. Sounds like you had a "slam - dunk"
with that big a stn (must have been like a small parade at every
shift change)!
As I recall WAR still exists but like you said not any CW going on
any more. I several guys here that were in AARS long before I was,
one of them in the late 20's. They all quit MARS after copying
the last CW bdcst on Sept 30 96 which we all copied on the 25wpm freqcy.
I just gave my old Vibroplex Original to a young Nation Guard friend
this morning at breakfast. Told him a little history about it.
Bought the McElroy bug first (looked like a chrome plated iron
but upside down). It was junk compared to the Vibroplex. That thing
went with me all thru WW2 and beyond into RO work for Panam then
CAA, and ARINC all of whom were still using CW for PTP comms at
least. That was in the 50's and 60's, but then even those units
also got into digital stuff specially ARINC from where I retired in
84. Such stuff as "SELCAL" was used extensively also digital
automatic ACARS for Flite departures, arrivals, etc. Now
THE ARINC BULLetin which is sent to me as a retiree shows they
have taken big leaps forward from 84. Pilots no longer need to
Report hourly posn reports, nor OPSNRML via voice. Its all
computerized from ARTC-ARINC-AIRCRAFT.
                     Joe/KH6JF
