There are a couple of things about the FCC web site that baffled me
for a while, but a phone call to the help line cured the problem as
you stated.
When doing a search for information about your or anyone's else call
it is tempting to put something in all the spaces on the query form.
It is not necessary, just the FRN, call sign, name (correct one) or
file number will do. I was unable to search for my information and
they explained to just put in my last name, a comma then the first
name and initial. The site supports wild card searches as well
using the * after the comma so I could access anyone with the same
last name then choose my own first name.
After reading the instructions carefully and navigating through it a
couple of times, I modified my license when I moved last April and
applied for the vanity call I now hold. I also have changed my
address in their data base (CORES) and paid fees online. If you
have trouble with the site a call to their help line will give you
any information you need and a "whole bunch" of help in a friendly
manner. I was impressed with the graciousness of the lady who
helped.
Once you have accomplished it, it can be easy but there is a button
on the modification screen that is often overlooked which causes
lots of trouble for filers. Read the HELP section CAREFULLY and
download the Java Console before you attempt to access any
information on the site. That takes a while, even with a broadband
connection, and there are a couple of moments you will think things
have stalled. If the site is busy it can be slow, but once the
console is on your computer the site moves right along.
