Just read your web page with interest. Possibly you have an ans or 2
for me. I also in 1940 tried to join what I thought was called the
"NRS". Not sure if that was the Naval Reserve Service, but it was
something similar to AARS at the time. Anyway they turned me down
for some vague reason. I thought it was strictly a volunteer
system such as AARS. Anyway I did sign up for AARS then instead,
and remained with them till 1950 when they were reformed into what
is now MARS. Was a CMD and Control opr at various stns where the
5th signal service detachments were the actual units I was assigned
to. I have tried via the www to trace the 5th Sig SVC historically
but came to a dead end and could locate no info on it, even at
Ft Gordon which I believe is supposed to be a Sig Corps historical
archive center. I was able to trace however one USATS boat
I served on as one of 2 military CW oprs (still on detached
service from 5th Signal Co). Its was the "Col George H. Penrose"
(Quartermaster corps assigned the name. It was prior to that the
Steam Yacht "Florida" owned previously by Vanderbilt and donated
to Military as small troop ship just prior to my assignment to it.
Entire crew were Civil Service except us 2 ham RO's.
