Yesterday I was fooling around on the local "88" repeater and finished talking to a
CT1 (by Echolink) when a guy I never heard W0KHW called a quick "CQ" He was
playing around with a homebrew 4 element Yagi that he had put together from PVC
pipe. The whole thing was turned with an "Armstrong" rotor. He was clearly not a
regular repeater guy but what a kick to talk to someone who builds things! I have to
admit I'm getting kinda burned out with the typical QSO. My _____ Hurts. My
Yaesu/Kenwood/Icom is broken and I'm sending it to the shop. How is WX/Work?
If I as, "How is DX" its often replied with, "Huh I'm just on VHF." So? DX is DX.
Worked Chicago on 2M SSB? How about KL7 on Six? If I ask (And I don't bother
anymore), "What are you building?" Well... The answers are just as bad. Most are
"building" up Acid Indigestion. Too busy for anything <sigh>
Yep, I hate to admit how tickled I was to talk feedline, antenna gain, Matching
devices. I told him about the Hairpin match I made for my 3 element Yagi using old
House Wire (Heavy Copper) and he talked about putting some old RG59 to use.
What current crop of Hams would even consider using 75 ohm coax or building a
Yagi out of PVC and some old pipes? Sure the SWR was a notch higher using 59
but who cares! There are still people homebrewing! Hoo Hoo!!!
