The original "Continental" code had no spaces in the letters, but did
use spaces in one character, the period, which was ".. .. ..", dit dit
space dit dit space dit dit. To us old timers it seems only lately that
it was changed to dit dah dit dah dit dah (the old comma) and the comma
was changed to what was the old "!" (exclamation), leaving us without
the latter.
There is one character from the "American Morse," however, that is  in
use today, it's the & (ampersand) but in International Morse it comes
our "es" and many hams copy it that way, instead of &.
