Hi all: Have watched this CW thread with great interest. To this day (am
72years old) I remember that very first Class "B" exam in front of the
inspector in Syracuse, NY. Remember I had to draw a hartley oscillator, a
P-P PA and a full wave rectifier circuit with all the parts labeled. Then
came the multiple quess tests. As several have commented, the ham of today
does not have to build equipment to get on the air. This is the cost of
modern technology which I think is good for the hobby and the
nation. Granted, in the time of emergency, I hope there are a few of the
"builders" around who can get something on the air so communications are
possible. I spent many years as a commercial and military CW operator, so
it is not that I do not know how, but now days just like to ragchew on SSB
on 40 and 20 meters. I still have an interest in the old days of low power
AM and CW as I am involved in the restoration of the radio room of the
LST-325 Ship Memorial. Just in case someone would ask, I got my Extra
Class 12 days before the 20WPM went away only because the code test was
given before the written and I took it just for the fun of it and passed
even though I had every intention of taking the written and upgrading after
the 15th of April.
Good DX to all
