When I was around 9 yrs old I used to visit the Canadian Pacific Railway
Station 
in  Renfrew, Ont (my home town). The there was a board across the station
window with about 5 relays ticking away, and a sounder (complete with
tobacco can) on a
stand. The station operator would talk to me, sell tickets at the ticket
window
and know what was going on on all five circuits... Even at 9 I was impressed.
