WOW! First ARRL 160 ever from the island. Station: K3, KAT500, KPA500.
Inverted L at about 40 ft. (13M) AGL, 100 ft. (33M) AMSL with Folded
Counterpoise (FCP). NO RX ANTENNA. Friday night did not start well with a
strong wind causing wires of the FCP to touch and trip the Amp with high
SWR. Eventually they twisted together and pushed resonance up to about 2k
so after only 48 Q's S&P I was done for the night. Fixed the FCP on
Saturday and with a late start did a few S&P until I found a usable
frequency about 0200 and the pileup began. Running on 160 as DX is a crazy
experience. Some signals 20 over 9, others S1 if you give them the benefit
of the doubt. Noise was a continuing factor especially with no receiving
antenna. Constantly jockeying the RF gain and risking loss of run frequency
listening to some callers sending their call over and over in the hopes I
would get enough elements to call them back. Thanks for hanging in there
guys. Not having had the opportunity for sleep on Saturday I couldn't stay
awake for the duration, but did manage to get back on for a while longer
after a break at 0600. I was very pleased with the mult count with good
west coast and two KH6's. As usual, KH7X did the Charlie Brown thing by
pulling the football on my AK hopes with AZ QTH. I only had about ten of
those! Thanks for all the Qs from signals big and small. TU Jon, W7JXY
calling me with the rare EWA mult. Got both WA4PGM and KA4RRU in their QRP
turtle race. Sorry there were some I just couldn't pull out of the noise.
And there are going to be a few disappointed NIL's from those who didn't
hang around long enough to give me your section when I asked for a repeat.
73, Jim K4QPL VP5M
