Very cool, Nate!
It's great you got on, and that they did this contest. I was skeptical, but clearly there was an impact on the ionosphere that was clearly perceptible for ham radio.
As John says, the D layer must have collapsed quickly (as it does) to allow longer skip on lower bands in the middle of the day!
I received a text from Bob McGwire N4HY who was with a government-funded ionospheric study for VA Tech during the eclipse on the coast of South Carolina - he will hopefully will update us.
He told me he worked a California station from SC using 100 W and a 30' dipole during the eclipse!
Will be interesting to see if that was when the "zone of totality" was in the middle of the country. Wonder if anyone worked from east coast into Africa near the end on the lower bands? That would be awesome.
I was amazed how bright it still was at the maximum eclipse in raleigh, NC (about 94% blockage). I noticed a distinctive temperature drop of several degrees during and after the max outage.
