Knew from the beginning this was to be a very part time effort, had a
previous commitment for dinner, so knew I'd lose some prime operating
time. Started off checking 15m and admiring the peace and quiet of the
band. Only ever heard one signal on 15m, W6TA, and he could never hear
me. 20m was fairly productive, but less than 30 min from the start of
the contest a wideband pulsing noise started up making it hard to work
anything but S9+ signals. It covered at least 40-10m (didn't check 80
or 160m). Had the same thing happen the cw weekend and I pulled the
plug. Didn't pull the plug, but went and did other things while
listening to the rig run in the background. About an hour after it
started, the noise went away. Hallelujah! Hopped back on 20m and S&P'd
and tried running. Alternated with 40m, while occasionally checking 15
and still heard only W6TA, who still never heard me. Had to stop at
2100Z to go to a cookout with neighbors. Got back on around 0030Z and
found 40m hot. I mean hot. Found a spot and ran, ran, ran. Wow! Most
fun I've had in quite some time. The Q meter hit short term rates of
240 and hour rates of 120. Got interrupted by some family phone calls
which killed the momentum. Checked 80m later, but signals were pretty
weak, so worked a handful and decided to call it a night. Only put in
3.5 hours for the contest, but had enough fun for at least 6. If only
I could do that good on 40m during SS.
