Let me be the first to attest to Jim's wisdom here.  Jim taught this to me two years ago for my mobile effort in NCQP.  I found it very easy to implement and definately helped my getting whole calls the first time while running.  Funny story.... last year in NCQP the pile as so big I kept moving the RX VFO further and further away from my TX freq to get the ones on the "edge".  After a while, I looked down and I was 5 KHz apart!  I was woking "split" and not even sending "UP"! HI!  There were plenty of ops who knew where I was listening, but I'm sure my 5KHz wide pile-up was not much appreciated by the other kind folks on the band!  oops!  Sorry about that.

My SS tip is that if you are Assisted or Unlimited, be sure to turn off autospotting if you decide to stop in one place and run.  Of course, I've never don that! TIC!

Following on from Guy's comment about XIT, when (if!) you get a good run 
frequency, you SOMETIMES, repeat sometimes, need to use RIT to copy someone 
calling you. Best method is to work the stations who are smart enough to 
tune on or near enough to your run frequency, but sometimes you need RIT to 
reel them in. Most radios have dinky little RIT knobs that are  tiring to 
use and easily confused with other controls. I've found that once I've 
established my frequency, I do a "A>B" to sync the VFO's. Then lock VFO B if 
it has a separate tuning knob and go to split, with VFO B being the transmit 
one. That way, instead of RIT, VFO A can be tuned without changing your run 
freq. Don't forget to turn it off if you go to S&P or you'll still be 
calling on your run frequency!

If your software supports the Left-Right shift keys for RIT, (Kenwood style) 
that's even better but be sure to either disable "QSY switches to S&P" or 
set the tolerance outside the max RIT shift. Also put a RIT reset character 
in your QSL string.
