[PVRCNC] [PVRC] SS Tip of The Day- Turn off downloads and updates during contest

Put this on your "to do" list for Saturday.

Turn off all automatic downloads, updates and upgrades on your logging
computer. The results can range from simply annoying and distracting to
disastrous! The last thing you need is for something to pop up over your
logging program telling you about the latest and greatest while you're
entering an exchange.

Last night Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, automatically downloaded a
large "Service Pack" for Windows XP, while I was playing with my N1MM setup.
I'm using an older desktop as a dedicated logging machine and the response
time for the keyboard went waaaay slow. If that had happened Saturday night
during a run, the words would not have been Sunday School quality!

Each computer/operating system is different, but start with the security
center. Turn off BOTH automatic downloads AND automatic install for
everything.

Other programs like your spam filters, firewalls, Adobe, printer software,
etc. may also be set to automatic. Turn 'em all off for the duration. Turn
them back on Monday. I generally do not set my shack computer to
automatically update anyhow, but it does download the updates. Take your
choice. Your mileage may vary.

Good luck and good hunting.

Jim, K4QPL
