[PVRCNC] WUNC-DT update

Definitely plumbing. When WCPE was building their current antenna/transmitter setup, I did a lot of cutting/fitting for their rigid line inside the station. Everything had to be cut to exact size for fittings and span and completely cleaned up. Real pain in the petard. Gives one a quite more robust meaning for "hard line". 37 kW on the antenna side of their transmitter combiner at the time.

I guess you can have some really high ERP if you have a gain of 28 or 33db (yoikes). And would that be 1 megawatt average digital or peak digital?

Yeah they are running 1MW erp. Visual power TPO (Transmitter Power Output) is about 62kW if I remember. I have pictures of the combiner for the FM stations on the John Hancock tower in Chicago somewhere. It is more of a plumbing job than it is RF. LOL. Having installed 3" copper rigid line (not Heliax) you spend all of your time cutting and measuring and smoothing.

I have been out to the WRAL/WRAZ et al transmitter site a number of times. Heh, if you guys are real nice to me... perhaps the group would be interested in a meeting out there for a tour? I can get the ch 22/28 chief (who is a ham) or one of the other guys to get us out there... I think.

Heck I am more interested in the WPTF site. The chief is a new ham as well.

I note that 12 Mhz bandwidth dual adjacent channel antennas are in the mix. I suppose that is what WRAL/WRAZ is running (48/49). I'd love to see the power combiner, or is there some kind of trickery for that? Seen some lists that indicated WRAL running megawatt ERP. That true?

Wellllllll they are very high gain antennas. But -- Just My Humble opinion
- What were they doing for the past couple of years that prevented them from
having an decent antenna on the top like every other broadcaster??

This is probably the antenna they are using:

And yes as broadcasters, we do lower the power for the crews. Most crews
carry RF detectors so they know when they are at their limit of RF exposure.

Crawling back into my hole...
