[PVRCNC] Ameritron AL-82 wire conversion question

Hi Jerry,

A pure 220 connection has a pair of hot wires and a safety ground. The neutral is required on a 220 device if a 120V connection is brought outside, as in a utility outlet on an electric range, or if there is an internal 120V load not pulled from a floating primary winding center tap on a transformer rated for the extra load.

The AL-82 transformer primaries are both 220 and it does not export a 120v connection, so only Black, Red and green should be connected. Using white wire [neutral] to connect to the AL82 chassis instead of or in parallel with the green safety wire is a code violation.

73, Guy.

Subject: [PVRCNC] Ameritron AL-82 wire conversion question

Anyone ever convert a Ameritron AL-82 from the original 3 wire Nema 6-15p to a 4 wire Nema 14-30p or other 4 wire connector? Since the original AL-82 wiring uses only Black, White and Ground and my house 240v uses Black, Red, White, and Green, how do you handle the the Green (ground) and White (neutral) wires?

The goal is to wire the amp for SS this weekend without destroying the amp and/or burning the house down.
