PVRCNC-East Chapter - July Meeting Notes
July 5th, 2007, Manchester's, Raleigh, NC, USA.

There were with fourteen members in attendance and two guests, one of
whom was attending his second meeting. Jim, K4QPL welcomed Jose, EA5DFV,
who joined us for dinner. Jose was in the area visiting family, and had
taken the time to get in contact with some of the people in his log.
K4QPL turned it over directly to member reports.

Around the Table

NT4D, Jay : Jay reported on his trip to West Virginia for a Field Day
outing with a group of old friends - with "no 'Skeeters"

EA5DFV, Jose : Jose opened by joking that his only English was "five
nine, one four". He is an avid SSB contester from his QTH in southern
Spain, and both hosts and participates in many multi-op contests. Jose
thanked us for inviting him to our meeting, and also joked that as host
of Spain's 20 meter IARU SSB station(AM5HQ), he had a good opportunity
to "spy" on W1AW/4 during a visit to AA4NC's station. He reported that
he also has developed an interest in operating some of the US state QSO
parties.

NX9T, Jeff, : Jeff reported going out to Ron's, N4XD, for Field Day.
He's been traveling a lot lately, so he's had little time to spare for
operating, but expected to operate IARU from his home "intermittently"
as time allowed.

Bill, K4CIA: Bill worked only 1 QSO in Field Day, with N4Q. Bill was
bemoaning the recent poor conditions on six meters, although he was able
to work a KH6 on six meters.

WA4WGA, Ray, : Ray was attending his second meeting, and was
nominated,seconded, and inducted as a member of PVRC/NC Chapter. He
reported operating Field Day in Ohio, where the club he visited was
using a Gap Titan. He is soon to move to Ohio, but appreciated being
made a member of the PVRC/NC group.

W4MY, Marty: Operated Field Day with the Tar River club, using a new
location for their operation. He thinks he's located a new
contester(KI4QXS) and hopes to be bringing him along to future meetings
when possible. Marty also was interviewed by WZAX-FM on the Friday
before Field day(ed. note: You can download an MP3 of the interview at:
http://www.zaxradio.com/audio/young-joyner.mp3 )

W4KAZ, Keith: Kaz reported on the Field Day operation using the special
event call sign N4Q. He presented K4CIA with his N4Q QSL card,
recognizing that Bill was the only local member to log the once in a
life-time(so far) event. The operation was conducted by N4YDU, N4PY,
K4CZ, K9EZ, and W4KAZ, racking up a modest 2093 mostly CW QSO's for
about 7800 points. Kaz noted he "didn't use his MyCrowFone" for any of
his FD Q's.

NT4Q, Jerry: Jerry , claiming to be the "Original 4Q", reported that
his HF yagi was completed, and after many setbacks the tower was DONE.
He'll be in Florida and will miss IARU

KA1ARB, Rob: Rob reported that he expected to begin breaking ground to
dig a BIG hole for the base for his self supporting tower.

W0UCE, Jack: Jack reported that his 1st place award for the xy?z?a SSB
contest had not arrived, and he was dissappointed.

N1LN, Bruce : Bruce was happy to report that he and XYL Laurie had two
of their three planned towers built, with one stack of rohn 45 left
outstanding. He also still has plenty of work left after that mounting
all of the antennas, but he's been chipping away at the project as his
time allows. He's expecting a piece of heavy equipment to arrive soon
that will make trenching for cabling a much easier task in the hard NC
clay soil. He operated Field Day with the Orange county group, where
they do a QRP battery operation as W4EZ.

N1YXU, Laurie : Laurie has been operating as ground crew for all of
the tower construction with Bruce. She has become comfortable with the
work as her experience level increases.

K4WES, Wes: Operated Field day as a 3A operation with WW4M, Jim.
Expecting to operate during IARU.

AA4NC, Will : Will made 20 Field Day QSOs, and is hosting the 20 and
40 meter SSB stations for IARU. He has himself, NT4D, KA1ARB, and K4MA
down as operators, and invited anyone interested to drop by the house to
operate.

K4QPL, Jim: Jim operated Field Day with the CARS group again, where
they logged about 1800 QSO's, and he thinks he may have found a K5 there
who liked the idea of contesting. He's got a conflict with his plan to
operate at N4AF for IARU with a family event, and the family event will
probably win out.

K2AV, Guy: Operated 1E for a bit during Field Day for fun, was looking
towards the IARU operation at N4AF.

There was also a discussion of IARU. The stations will be registered by
Howie with the ARRL, as the W1AW callsign is given with the permission
of ARRL, via its trustee K1ZZ, David Sumner, and N4AF, Howie is
responsible for the station assignments.
The current expectations for assignments are as follows, as of 06/07/07:

     * CW 160 --N4AF
     * CW 80 --N4AF
     * CW 40 --N4AF
     * CW 20 --N4AF
     * CW 15 --N4AF
     * CW 10 --AA4NC

     * SSB 160 -- unassigned
     * SSB 80 --WB4MSG
     * SSB 40 --AA4NC
     * SSB 20 --AA4NC
     * SSB 15 --KG4NEP
     * SSB 10 --KG4NEP

The meeting soon fell into anarchy at this point--propagation failed and
the bands were soon dead.
