I think 40 was probably just as hot. I was at 7010 or so the first night
and rates were pretty good so I stayed there until at least 02Z or so. I
have to do a bit more pruning for phone, but this 2 el wire beam I put up
really worked well. It was low enough at about 45-50 feet to have good
close-in coverage, but high enough to grab all the west coasters pretty
well. I aimed it at about 300 degrees to concentrate on 8 thru 0 land. I
may try to put up a low dipole NE/SW for phone as an add-on, but this
worked well enough alone I used about 900' of rope to support it off a
single tower from 90 feet! I also noted it is very important to use a
couple ropes between the elements to maintain spacing as it definitely
affects the impedance and bandwidth of the antenna if they get too close!
For some reason my K6STI models keep coming up about 3-4 percent low in
frequency on wire antennas. I had to do some pruning to get it into the
low end of 40.
For SS I think this antenna outperforms my 402CD at 125 feet when it was
working properly, so it's a keeper for stateside contests.

Single op, two radio. Low Power. 24 hours.

40 174 348 11
20 252 504 45
15 10 20 1

Total Points: 138,092. This would have made the "A" top 25 last year
(after
log checking) but I think there are going to be some other very good
scores
in this class.
Wasn't 80 unbelievable on Saturday night? I managed to get on "Boardwalk"
(3.528mhz) and EVERYBODY had to pay rent, even the CA and Midwest guys
(as
well as one or two much closer who in the interest of good feelings will
go
nameless) who tried to push my 100 watts off on numerous times but
eventually they gave up with all the other stations calling me through
them!
I'll have to look at my log to see how long I was there, but it really
cooked. Of course, new rx antennas and the Orion II didn't hurt!
I paid my dues on 15, though, since my tribander doesn't do well on 15 so
I
elected to hold my frequency on 20 and use the second radio with a dipole,
S&P only in SO2R mode.
Continuing the monopoly theme, I would have gladly traded two or three
extra
Alaska's for one Newfoundland-Labrador. Never even heard anyone and no one
was out S&P as they usually are.
On the down side, I think NCCC really did a number on us with the HMO
thing.
I've never heard so many new stations in U class from SCV, Eb etc. on
Sunday. They must have had a wholesale Chinese fire drill with their
stations and radios. Will be interesting to see the "......op at ...."
list.
Oh well, the first half of fun is over. Now we have two weeks to get ready
for the hard work.

Jim, K4QPL
