PVRC/NC Meeting Minutes
1 May 2003, Ryan's Steakhouse, Crossroads Plaza, Cary
Members in attendance: Bob N2NFG, Brian K3KO, Jim K4QPL, Jeff NX9T,
Chuck K4NYS, Bob K4HA, Will WJ9B, Bert N4CW, Jim WW4M
Official Business:
Jim WW4M reported on the visit of PVRC president Jack K4VV, Guy K2AV
and himself to Winston-Salem to talk with Henry W2DZO and Raj KB6MTH about
club growth in their area.
Member News:
Bert N4CW won't be able to operate WPX-CW -- he'll be on the road
(asea?) in Bermuda. He'll be operating with the Smith Chart group for
Field Day and won't be leaving for Maine until July.
Will WJ9B had fun operating the first night of the Florida QSO Party,
although he found there was little propagation on 15m and even less on
10m. He managed to work a few Qs in the Michigan QSO Party and plans on
operating in WPX. He'll operate Field Day with K4QPL and KO4PY at Lake
Jordan with a 2A operation.
Bob K4HA helped Mark KI7WX take down the towers at the North Raleigh
house he recently sold, and he's been helping K4ITL put up 90 feet of
tower.
Chuck K4NYS went to both RARSfest and Elkin (in the mountains), and
also has helped with the towers at KI7WX and K4ITL. He's also been working
on restoring his TH7 and has been cleaning up his shack. Chuck is looking
forward to WPX and may use both his MP and Omni-6. He's also been enjoing
the NC morning net and has been improving his traffic handling skills.
Jeff NX9T will be at Dayton and hopes to see Bert at the Contesting
Dinner. He's mounted a 706 in his car with a screwdriver antenna and has
noticed no difference when compared with his Outbacker. Unfortunately
he's been unable to track down the source of some electrical interference
in his car.
Jim K4QPL is excited about operating with the WPX multi-multi at
Howie's. He also wants to get on VHF and is soliciting comments about the
Yaesu VX7 -- he's looking for something to take with him to England.
Brian K3KO has rid himself of his VHF/UHF gear and is now working with
a direct conversion rig. Brian has a new 10-port indoor/outdoor antenna
switch and he's accepting suggestions for the 3 unused ports. He'll be on
the air for WPX-CW. He also observed that normal SSB sounds great on a
regular rig using 20 KHz filters and that there's no need for special HiFi
SSB.
Bob N2NFG hasn't been on since the 10m contest, but he did make a
downpayment on his new home (same lot). A tower will go up as soon as the
new house is ready (he needs a 4-foot top section with thrust bearing or
another 10-foot section). He's planning on operating WPX.
Jim has a new job. He'll be operating FD again with the KD4RAA group
out in Snow Camp, encouraging regular VHF/UHF repeater users to get on HF.
73, Jim WW4M
