it can take 42secs to connect. The modem has to send all the codes to
determine if any are missing because of robbed-bit signalling.

I've just moved and changed telcos. The same modem at the last place took
forever to connect and went through all sorts of boops that the 33k modem
didn't do. At my new place it connects quickly. Same 56k at both places.

V90 works just fine at 56k

the phone company could have different equipt on the different lines.

still from what you say, your modem may not be the problem
