PVRCNC meeting for January 3, 2002 was cancelled due to winter storm.
PVRCNC meeting for December 6, 2001:
Attending K2AV Guy, KE4GY Frank, N4TL Tom, AA4NC Will, K4HA Bob, NX9T
Jeff, K4NYS Chuck, K07X Alan, W2CS Gary, N4CW Bert, K3KO Brian, N4AF
Howie, K7GM Rick, K4QPL Jim.
Meeting called to semblance of order at 6 pm. Much discussion of SS.
Was only a matter of time until someone (different soul every year)
came out with the now mandatory standard "Barefoot Sucks!" remark.
Good to see a contingent from the far eastern hinterlands: Car-pooling
K7GM and N4AF in attendance. Rick is keeping his ritzy (and ham
unfriendly) digs in Greenville and moving his heavy artillery to N4AF
to help prop up the NY4A wars. This apparently includes amps, towers
and antennas. Is this turning into W3LPL south?
Got into discussion of 40m 5 element wide-spaced quad going up at
N4AF. It's strung from a catenary between towers, but if on a boom it
would be a 168' boom. Preliminary versions are remarkably better than
the shorty 40 at 130'. Works through to Europe during daylight. K2AV
using professional versions of modeling software to work through
issues. Will have a near-final version for the ARRL DX CW. Aren't new
toys fun?
NX9T has added 80 Inv Vee and 40 rotatable dipole. Some good scores
from over there, too!
K4HA has new 4 el's on 10 & 15 up.
AA4NC is becoming heavily invested in lightning arrestors. After last
year, this is a surprise? He needs spark gaps to protect the spark
gaps.
N4TL his a Personal Best in SS CW. Bert likes Tom's 756 Pro. You guys
should run coax between your houses.
K2AV has got lot of stuff buried in trench out to tower. 1 1/4
hardline, 5/8 hardline, controls, etc. Now to hook it up to stuff in
the house. Unfortunately, continuing illness of Mother-in-law in
western NC has occupied lots of time (as of writing, she had passed
away).
N4CW is writing a new book: Blowing up bias caps for Dummies.
KO7X working Saturdays, but will be on in the 160 tests with a
"mongrel dipole". Not real clear what it is a cross of. Search on
Google does not turn up any hits. That makes it the KO7X Mongrel
Dipole. Hopefully that's a 160 signal that's a cross between a pit
bull and a great Dane.
K4QPL finally getting the SO2R box to working. Think he replaced half
the parts.
WW4M did real well at Brian's for the SS.
There must not be any places for Howie to go out east for junk deserts
that Lynn doesn't hear about it (don't you just love small towns).
Went out for desert FOUR (count 'em, 4) times.
Meeting deteriorated into misc. technical debate and scientific BS
around 7:30. Rumored that Howie took his fifth desert on the way out
but no way to independently confirm. K7GM isn't talking.
Next Meeting 7 Feb 02, 5:30 BS, 6 something Meeting, Ryan's Family
Steakhouse, Crossroads Plaza, Cary NC.
73, Guy.
