Tom,

Put in a call to the CP&L Customer Service Center and report the noise. Be sure to tell them that you heard the noise when it was raining, as that indicates that it is most likely a bad lightning arrester. Most "gap" noise sources such as loose hardware and bad insulators will be quiet during rain, and get worse in dry weather.

Gary Sauls is the noise specialist, and they will open a service order for him to go check it out. When he locates the problem, he will have a line crew go out and work on the noisy pole(s). It usually takes 2-3 weeks.

The more info. you can give them on location, the better. The higher in frequency you can go and still hear the noise will get you closer to the source. If you have a receiver capable of AM receive on 6m, 2m or the aircraft band, that will enable you to just about tell which pole it is coming from, especially if you have a small yagi antenna. N4CW has a small IC706 and a yagi and has helped me locate noise in the past.

It's an ongoing struggle usually...good luck

Will
