I haven't even seen the inside of mine in years but was thinking there wasn't 
room for a project like that. Before this other outfit came up with the 
material to more or less duplicate the original I was thinking about 
experimenting with fiber optics, then I discovered that RS still had a few 
new ones available (at that time) so I just ordered a new replacement. That's 
been several years ago and my original still hasn't given up the ship which I 
don't understand as this scanner runs many hours daily and has since I 
purchased it new in the early 90's.
