A significant revision of the index to internal parts and firmware for
the Watkins-Johnson DSP series of receivers (i.e. WJ-8711 family) is now
maintained on my Watkins-Johnson website.
I've exhausted every document and radio I own to develop the document
section of this index. For continued expansion, this project is now
dependent on information sent by owners of these fine radios or from
documents they have for them. Information from manuals covering earlier
non-A versions of the HF-1000, WJ-8711, and WJ-8712 or any version of
the WJ-8723 would be particularly useful. Many thanks to those who have
already sent information. If you submit information and do not want
your name and or call included, please let me know.
If you are willing to contribute, the most useful way is to pop the top
cover of your radio and copy the numbers you can find on controller
board for U1 (68HC11*** processor), U12 (processor EPROM, U37
(DSP5600****), and U56 (DSP EPROM) as well as the model and serial
number from the rear panels. If in doubt, copy all the numbers on these
components and I'll sort them out.
The easiest way to contribute if you own a WJ-8711 or WJ-8712P, is to
copy the firmware number, which displays at boot up. Also copy the model
and serial number from the rear panel.
The board numbers are very useful. There are WJ boards floating around.
Being able to identify them and knowing what and where they can be used
will help populate the pool of available components for maintaining
these now discontinued receivers.
The board numbers can be found along the edge of the circuit boards and
typically start with 14632ASSY followed by a 7xxxxx or 9xxxxx (14632
being the CAGE code identifying the manufacturer, i.e. WJ). On several
versions, the board ID numbers are along the rear edge.
If you have copied the hex or bin files for the two (or 3) EPROMs U12
and U56 (and front panel A1), I am quietly assembling a library of
firmware. Once the question of intellectual property is resolved, I may
be able to post these on the website. Currently for U12 I have
v04.01.01, v04.01.03, v04.01.10 and for U56 v03.00.01, v04.02.05,
v04.02.07 and for A1 v3.1.21 and v3.2.0.
Please note that a driving factor in all this is documenting which
firmware versions can be used in which versions of the radios. Though
the last versions, v04.01.10 and v04.02.07, are widely considered to be
be the most desirable, many of the older boards and radios will not work
with these versions.

It is in the table under "Option Lists."
