[Premium-Rx] LCD backlighting

Dear fellow members of this group,

Given the diversiy of LCD backlighting, I would appreciate some 
advice on this topic for a small project.

The ideal solution would be something like the yellow backlight for 
the ubiquitous 1602-type LCDs, but larger (about 38 mm by 115 mm). 
Electrical noise should be minimal (e.g. DC supply only).
    There were some rumors about electroluminescent material cut to 
size by the user. However, that may now be obsolete.

All ideas would be welcome.
