You might want to see my message of 6/7/19 ("Re: WJ-8711A Main Tuning 
Encoder") regarding this.

There is obvious commonality in the ergonomic aspects and overall 
functionality, but for all of the speculation you hear I have still not 
heard anything resembling a plausible story about how that came to be.

Have a look at the schematics for the RX340 and the HF1000/8711. The T-T 
and W-J appear to have been designed to meet the same specifications, 
but the HW and firmware architectures are different.
