Folks,
I recently saw a picture of a little box with a row of BCD encoders wired
to the
connector in the back of a Harris RF230 transceiver. It is from Dale KW1I:

As Peter writes, it is quite simple to design such system on an Arduino
with an encoder, an LCD, and three I2C 8 bit I/O expanders (for wiring
simplicity,
instead of a multiplex).

You may see what is involved.
With an Arduino MEGA there will be no need of expanders, as plenty of
digital
ports are available.
