[Premium-Rx] Prevent Broken Slugs

Gentlemen,

I have a receiver that was manufactured in 1967 that has never been aligned since it left the factory.  Unfortunately it needs to be aligned.

While I have the correct plastic and nylon Hex alignment tools for the slugs in the variable inductors and transformers, I worry that the slugs might not move or will bind up.  I really don't want to crack a slug.

Are there any good ways to prevent cracking a slug that has never been adjusted? They only need slight adjustment and none appear to be at end of travel.

It seems like a few drops of isopropanol or a little heat might help.  But I also see the downside to both ideas.  I know from experience that slugs that are thermally cold are more likely to not move and crack.

I would love some good ideas right about now.  I will adjust the variable capacitors first hoping that prevents the need to adjust the RF inductors, but the IF transformers adjust only with slugs.
