[Premium-Rx] RF590 Alphanumeric VFD display

Hey folks....
I'm considering the purchase of a Harris RF590 to add to my prem rcvr collection. I have a line on a nice one except the Alphanumeric display is very weak. 
What are my options should this display go dark. Has anyone tackled the task of replacing the VFD with an LED display?.I'm guessing this would not be a simple task (grin).
Any thoughts or suggestions?. I can't stand the thought of this receiver becoming an expensive paper weight after the display goes dead.....
