Dear William

I am not familiar with WJ 977 but it sounds similar to the WJ-8731A using 2
tuners and film strip scales. These in turn are not much different from
the plug-in tuner versions such as the WJ-585.

I have the similar Norlin SR-209. They all use the same type of tuner head
based on a multi-section variable inductor generally known as a "snail", and
excellent they are too.

These all have the same IFs as far as I know: 21.4 MHz for the lower bands
and 60 MHz and 21.4 MHz for the upper bands. I'd start with that as a
guide.

As regards the tuner, it may well have one box but are there separate
variable inductors for the two bands? The usual approach by Nems-Clarke,
CEI, WJ and Norlin was to have a separate complete tuner per band, switching
only the inputs, outputs and DC lines to avoid the problems of switching
critical oscillator circuits.

Good luck and tell us how you get on.

Subject: [Premium-Rx] info schematics for Honeywell 6846 receiver

I recently acquired a Honeywell 6846 receiver, 30-300 MHZ and would like
find schematics for it. In many ways, it resembles The WJ 977 receiver I
have, except The Honeywell unit has no ident markings on any of its sub
units.

It has a rack mount chassis about the same size as the WJ 977. It has a
single tuning module, rather than separate 30-90 and 90-300 tuners found on
the 977. A knob switches the band. It has an inner and outer tuning knob
with a single shaft going to the tuner box.

Freq readout uses a horizontal wheel with a tape-like display.

There are five other aluminum box units, all plug in to vertical sockets,
not through the chassis. None are identified.. It is an AM/FM unit with 20
kHz, 200 kHz and 5 MHZ IF BW and a BFO knob. There are the usual RF, IF and
audio gain knobs. There is an IF OUT BNC on the front of the panel. The
antenna BNC is on the rear. There is a small speaker on the front panel and
there are screwdriver squelch controls and an indicator lamp. There is a
level meter, but not for on frequency tuning.

The radio works, but is wonky in IF response and demod. I just got it and
have not determined the IF output freq yet. The only info I have is that it
may have initially come from a Canadian auction. Any info on a source for
schematics would be appreciated.
