Okay, okay, here goes.
On the bench...well, to me not worth the time...much too close. And in most cases better or as good as the residual limits of my test equipment.
Listening tests over a couple weeks -- from NDB searching, AM BCB DXing and general HF for ham and Intl B'casters the 8711 seems to have (very) slightly quieter floor for listening down in the mud. Recovered audio a bit crisper. Purely subjective, but I was able to flip switches and do instant comparisons. For long term, armchair relaxing, I'd have to go with the 340. If I could only keep one, it would be TT. Honestly, in a blind test, I'd never know the blonde from the redhead...
(Note: both radios had their audio fed to a console - it's impossible to appreciate a good radio's features with those little internal "monitor" speakers)
I have always loved W-J stuff. Partially b/c I'm most familiar with their guts. Not to say that I don't really, really like the Harris and Racal stuff, b/c I do !!! BTW: that Harris 550 is a real sleeper and really underated, but that's another posting.
Anyhow, you asked. So that's one guy's opinion.
Happy listening,
Bob, N1KPR

C'mon Bob! Which one won? The WJ 8711 or the TT 340?
