If you haven't already found it, there's a Signetics design guide that  
covers the 82xx series of counters and shift registers, look for "Designing 
with  MSI Vol 1 Feb70.pdf" here.....

It might provide useful information if you do decide to try a  substitution.

source of the device. Its quite  common in older premium receivers (in 
particular WJ).

Managed to find  the datasheets after a major and lengthy trawl using 
Google - but no obvious  source for the part.

Does anyone know a source accessible from the  UK  - or a readily available 
equivalent?
