Memory battery shorted, or corrosion from it spread around?

Another good possibility. I have had radios come in with corroded battery 
sockets and shorted batteries. When power was applied Q1 shorted and 
actually burned the lead right off the battery. The arc usually takes out a 
string of CMOS parts on the board.

If cordless phone batteries or other non-industrial batteries have been 
installed the problem can be much worse.

I have the batteries and some of the sockets in stock.
