[Premium-Rx] Watkins Johnson rack speaker

Mac,

You are probably referring to the WJ S 9903E Speaker Unit.

It has 7 BNC connectors on the rear for 7 800 Ohm audio inputs from demodulators / receivers. There is a 7 position rotary switch that selects the amplified output. It is very common that audio is distributed through coax on premium receivers for a multitude of reasons outside the scope of this thread.

The fact that the unit in question has an oval speaker installed, probably eliminates it as an RF distribution amplifier.

I trust that this it what you have, and you might be able to confirm this by looking at the WJ product plate attached to the upper right hand corner of the front panel (if it has not been removed)
