Dear WJ premium receiver owner,
My WJ 8718A9 recently display the following problems which I desperately
hope to solve, this receiver is my life,.. well my second life:
1) The onboard nicad memory backup battery went dead, I replaced it
with separately mounter 2 AA cells and drop about 0.6v across a diode, this
works fine as the memory was retained after switching off the receiver.
However, the 10MHz digit seem to return to 0 everytime I switch off the
receiver and then switch on again. I do not have the circuit diagram and
have no prior experience repairing this receiver. Can any kind WJ owner
help me by shining some light on this please?
2) The receiver received AM broadcast very well, the bandpass filter
works well too. But the SSB reception sounds quite distorted, switching to
CW mode helps a bit but not much. The bandpass filters also seem to only
function on AM and CW (have not tried FM mode) but not on SSB. I tried the
LSB selection and then tried the USB/LSB selection, same distortion. Can
any WJ owner point me to any possible reasons on this please.
3) I tried to hook up the receiver to an external IF demodulator (the
one-off product by Surrey Electronics from the UK) and hook up the output to
an external amplifier. The audio sound very soft. Is there any IF buffer
built into this receiver and is there any IF output level adjustments on
this receiver?
I would also like to understand how to calibrate the meter (Audio and Signal
Strength) for this receiver.
Sorry if I asked stupid questions as I do not have a maintenance manual and
a proper circuit diagram if it existed for this receiver which seems more of
a custom built product.
Many thanks and best regards
