Success ----- maybe !
Talk about a can of worms. I pulled every card one by one and found a
location for the battery (BT1)
on the Synthesizer Interface Card ( 794275-1 ). No battery installed, of
course but there is hope.

John,
sorry I didn't see your post until now. I've recently worked on four different variants of the 87xx family. Just a thought, but I refuse to replace the NiCad batteries with new NiCads. Maybe the purists won't agree with homebrewed modifications, but, well, that's me. Anyhow, I use NiMH batteries whenever I do that kind of repair -- W-J, Racal, and whoever else need a fresh RAM battery. If you are a member of the Yahoo Group for W-J radios, you can see how I tackled the "off-board" installation of the battery. I spent a good part of a recent Saturday afternoon repairing a PC Bd that a leaky NiCad began eating. In a few of the cases, the copper traces, in the battery's vicinity, were completely gone due to the chemical etching of the leak.
Here's the link below. It's just a suggestion, but maybe worthy of a look.
Enjoy the radio -- remember, regardless of their age, they were the top of the heap at one time, and still can run circles around much of the (so called) modern stuff.
