You may be able to run some of the programs in a win7 virtual pc xp mode, if you have win7 ultimate its a small download from Microsoft to get it going. What it does is run a virtual windows xp copy in win7, its a bit slower but lets you run many of the programs that only work in XP.

I use it everyday at work to run software that only has win98 drivers etc, think big CNC machines :), the serial port support works fine. If you don't want to do that run virtualbox and http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ has a good page about it with the required download. You don't need an original xp install.
