Hi Pat,
I don't know too much about them myself but here's my view on your 
questions:
1) I suspect they were first released either 94 or 95. I say this as the top 
level drawing in my user manual shows the initial release date of the 
drawing as 12-Apr-94.
2) No idea - can't help, however mine has V1.36 for a SN of 837783/011 with 
no options fitted.
3&4) As far as I'm aware there are no hardware variants of the 895 over 
time. The only variation I know of is the factory fitted option of  variable 
IF bandwdiths as opposed to the standard fixed. I assume this more than just 
different firmware, or alternatively the firmware is not field replaceable 
ie not socketed? I don't have a service manual so I'm unsure if that's 
corect or not.  Can't recall any other factory fitted options, and don't 
know if the factory options can be retrofitted by an end user. If anyone has 
a service manual I'd like to hear from you.
