Yesterday I watched an auction for a (supposed) working RA6790/GM
that had been disassembled and sold for its parts. The total figure came
to
$1131.35 not including some obviously inflated shipping and insurance
for each item. Of course I participated in a few items albeit unsuccessful
so I do feel a bit complicit in the deed. I suppose one can only guess the
myriad of motives for such an unnecessary cannibalization. Only the input
filter did not sell.

Hi Mike,
I watched the auction also and did buy a needed circuit board that should
get
a spare 6790 working again. Apparently there are a number of us 6790 fans
out
there who are willing to pay a little extra to get that one hard-to-find
part to complete
our receivers. The auction seemed to be very successful for the seller!

Not everyone needs to buy a whole receiver to get one or two needed parts
but I will agree some of the bidders seem to have gotten carried away! The
same
seller sold one or two almost complete non-working radios for around $250.
I think
buying a whole receiver is probably the best way to get extra parts.

But if you need just one part or I.F. filter to complete a radio then you
may end
up having to fight other bidders and pay a premium price when that part is
guaranteed
working and you want that part right now. I see the same thing happen when
someone
parts out an R-390A receiver on eBay. It's a win-win situation for the
seller!
