I own a Racal 6790 GM, which is in good working order (passes BITE test).
However, in the last day or so the frequency readout LCD has failed - at
least intermittently.

1) Is this a common problem with this receiver? The display works correctly
intermittently, but usually displays a screen looking rather like this
'8888888888888888'

Hi Simon,
I've not got a 6790, but typically when an LCD display shows your symptom
the reason is merely an intermittent interconnecting cable to the display
from the controller. Normally, LCD displays are connected with a thin flat
ribbon cable, each end of which slides into a slot on the display and on the
mating circuit board. Since LCD displays consume practically no power, a bit
of oxidation or dust can easily cause intermittent behaviour. The "fix" is
merely to reseat the flat cable into the connector slots. I'd be surprised
if your radio has a faulty display.
