Thanks for the advice from members on fixing that dead HF-1000.  I got it working again.  It turned out to be a bad microprocessor on the front panel.  I also replaced the buffer chip between the connector and processor.  The voltage must have gone through the buffer into the microprocessor.  Now I know how to replace a 40 pin DIP and surface mount components.  It was a lot of fun getting this going.
