Interesting idea. Sure, you can use almost anything that will store energy as long as it has characteristics similar to the original device.
1) Form: Radial leaded Ni-Cad 3.6V battery, 90 mAh, -20 to +85C operating
2) Fit: Physically compatible with original battery holder, similar length
3) Function: Low self discharge rate, no shelf life, low charge rate, same impedance
The other radios I own will all get new batteries. Some have cordless phone batteries jammed in. One has RC car batteries. One has a non rechargeable lithium cell, very wrong.
Note: The Cadnicas are epoxy sealed so they probably won't leak unless they explode. The original battery has a soft seal. The charging circuit does not provide enough current to explode the battery <20 mA (100 mW).

Why not use a 1F supercap type capacitor. No leakage problems and works just like a battery. i used them in 8718 and RF590s and they work fine. chose right voltage rating. doesn't have to be exactly the same voltage, can use 5V Cap for most applications.
