Hello, gents. I just acquired a rather nice looking RF-590 without a manual
(also known as a R-5095B/G according to the tag. Unfortunately no manual
accompanied this receiver. From what I've been able to ascertain, it seems very
awkward to tune or input frequencies. Does anyone have access to manuals, or a
brief primer on using this premium-rx? Thanks. So far I'd say that it's on
par with my Rockwell/Collins HF-2050 receivers and inferior to my Icom 756
Pro2.....Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC

Hi Walt,
The RF-590 is pretty straightforward to tune and enter frequencies.
First make sure the receiver is not in "remote" mode. There is a row of small
pushbuttons above the main tuning knob. Make sure the LED next to the "remote"
pushbutton is extinguished. To enter a frequency first push the small button
marked "frequency"(KHz) directly above the numeric keypad. Observe that a small
cursor moves underneath the last digit on the left side of the frequency
readout display, or under the "tens" of MHz digit. Enter the digits one at a time
starting with the tens of MHz digit. So for 1290 KHz enter 0-1-2-9-0 then press
the keypad key directly to the right of the main tuning knob marked "tune"
twice. The LED next to tune goes off then comes back on. Note that the small
cursor now moves directly under the 1KHz digit or in this case the zero. When you
turn the main tuning knob the receiver will now tune in 1KHz steps. If you
want different tuning steps push the "tune rate" button and the small cursor
under the tuning display digits will move to the right each time you press the
button, so it will move under the .1Khz digit, then .01 digit and finally under
the 1Hz digit. Press the button again and it will start at the left of the
display under the tens of MHz digit. The tuning steps will move at whatever digit
the cursor is below. To get quickly back to tuning in 1KHz steps push the
white "rcv" button to the left of the main tuning knob. The other buttons in the
small row should be fairly intuitive to figure out how they work. Hope this
may help you get started. Good luck, Todd WD4NGG
